A leader is required to run a country. A leader is elected by the public as Prime Minister. Many Prime Ministers came and went after independence, but there were some Prime Ministers who served the country of India.

Jawaharlal Nehru

Birth- Nov 14, 1889

Death- May 27, 1964

India became independent on 15 August 1947.  After independence, the Indian National Congress party influenced the politics of the entire country and Jawaharlal Nehru assumed the position of Prime Minister.

In this way, Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of independent India.  He played a pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle and is also the architect of the modern Indian state.

He became so popular in the public that he was elected Prime Minister for three consecutive terms (1947-1952-1957-1962).  He died after serving for 16 years and 286 days. And thus he became the first Prime Minister in India’s history to hold the post of Prime Minister for a long time.

Lal Bahadur Shastri

Birth- Oct 2, 1904

Death- Jan 11, 1966

After the death of Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri became Prime Minister on 9 June 1964. He was also from the Congress Party. Indo-Pak war also took place while he was Prime Minister. Shastri Ji was a man of simplicity and made fun of this simplicity too many times. He was a man who, while holding the post of Prime Minister, neither had his own house nor his own car.

Indira Gandhi

Birth-Nov 19, 1917

Death-Oct 31, 1984

Indira Gandhi was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru and the first woman Prime Minister of India. Her influence in the public was so much that she was elected to the post of Prime Minister for three consecutive times.

While holding this post for 11 years and 59 days, very big events took place; the biggest events were the India-Pakistan war in 1971. She got the first nuclear test done in Pokaran.

She fought fearlessly against communism and sectarianism. She was being awarded the “Bharat Ratna” in 1971.

Morarji Desai

Birth- Feb 29, 1896

Death- Apr 10, 1995

The first time, the leader of another party was going to become the Prime Minister. And Morarji Desai of Janata Dal Party became Prime Minister.  He was the first Prime Minister who improved the relation between India and Pakistan.  And he also became the first Prime Minister to be awarded India’s highest honor Bharat Ratna, and Pakistan’s highest honor, “Nishan-E-Pakistan”.

Rajiv Gandhi

Birth- Aug 20, 1944

Death- May 21, 1991

Rajiv Gandhi is known as the youngest Prime Minister in Indian history. Rajiv Gandhi’s contribution to the development of the country was very much visible by his actions, He actually established Jawahar Navodya Vidhalayas in the country to promote education. He also contributed significantly to promoting modernity. The Jawahar Rojgar Yojana was started by Rajiv Gandhi.

P.V.Narsimha Rao

Birth- June 28, 1921

Death- Dec 23, 2004

His full name was Pamulparti Venkata Narsimha Rao. Narsimha Rao is known as a very experienced leader. He contributed significantly to advancing education.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee
