According to the latest analysis, more than 19,500 languages or dialects are spoken in India. Language is the main feature that helps people to communicate and develop a relationship with each other.
We are mentioning a list of some Indian dialects that would be quite interesting so letās see what they are:-
Hindi
The most spoken language in India is Hindi and considered one of the official languages of the country.
The Hindi language is spoken by more than 52.83 Crores people as well as it is the fourth most spoken language in the world.
The Hindi language is spoken mainly in the states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Delhi. The Hindi language includes Awadhi, khadi, and braj bhasha.
Bengali
The second most spoken language in India is Bengali; spoken by almost 9.72 Crores people or we can say 8.03 percent of the total population of India. It is mostly spoken in South Asia.
This language was earlier influenced by Arabic and Persia and was a secular language for indo Aryans. It is mostly spoken in the Eastern states such as Assam, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Tripura.
In 2010, the legislative assembly and parliament of Bangladesh, and West Bengal proposed to make Bengali a UN official language but no action was taken on this matter.
The phonemic Bengali consists of 7 vowels 29 consonants and 7 nasalized vowels.
Gujarati
The Gujarati language is the 6th most spoken language in India and almost 55.5 million people in India or 4.5 percent of the total population speak Gujarati.
This language is almost 700 years old.
Gujarati is the official language of Gujarat as well as spoke in union territories of Daman and Diu and Dadar and Nagar Haveli.
The Gujarati language is taken from Sanskrit through Prakrit. This language is rich in vowels as it has 7 vowels. The Gujarati language has also borrowed words from English and Portuguese. It is the 26th most spoken language in the world.
Kannada
The Kannada language is called as kannarese. It is a well known Dravidian language of India. It is mostly spoken in Karnataka, India.
It is the 27th most spoken language in the world and almost 35 million people use this language for communication. It is the administrative as well as the official language of the Karnataka state.
Kannada is closely related to Telugu script as both are taken from old kannarese script as following the old Kannada (450- 1200 CE), middle Kannada (1200- 1700 CE), and modern Kannada (1700 CE- present). The literature of Kannada began with Kavirajamarga or Nripatunga (9th century CE).
Dogri
Dogri language is almost spoken by 2.3 million people mostly in the state Jammu and Kashmir. The reference to Dogri was found in the ānah sipthiā (the nine heavens) written by the poet Amir khosrow in 1317CE.
It is influenced by other languages English and Persian. Dogri language is taken from Dogra akkhar script. People who speak Dogri known as Dogras and place where it is spoken is called Duggar.
Dogri was added in the 8th schedule of the constitution of India in 2001. It is considered as one of the 22 official languages of India. Dogri is also spoken in the Northern region of Punjab and in the Himachal Pradesh.
Assamese
The Assamese language is also known as Asamiya. It is closely related to Bengali and Oriya; it has no grammatical gender distinctions.
The root of the Assamese language is derived from the family of indo European language as it is divided into three categories- the Indic, the Iranian, and the Dardic. Assamese has been mentioned in the 8th schedule of Indian constitution.
It is almost spoken by 19 million people. This language has been spoken mostly in the Southern state of Meghalaya, Bangladesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Bhutan.
The Assamese script was very unique as they use the bark of āthe Sanchi treeā for writing them.
Punjabi
This language has been ranked as the 11th most spoken dialects of India and even in foreign countries too.
This language has been introduced from Prakrit and Apabhramsa and you can see a mixture of Persian and Arabic words.
Gurumukhi is the significant scripture of Punjabi and other local scripts are also popular.
